How the Sections Fit Together

Students often hear terms like research question, thesis, or hypothesis named as if they were sections. They are not. These items live inside the main sections, not beside them.

Which Structure Applies to Your Paper

There are two main shapes, and the components differ slightly between them.

Empirical Papers (IMRaD)

Papers that collect and analyse data follow IMRaD. This covers psychology, biology, education research, sociology, and business studies.

IMRaD stands for Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. The full stack is: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Literature review, Methodology, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, References, and Appendices.

Sometimes the literature review is folded into the introduction. Check your target journal or brief before you start writing.

Humanities and Argument-Driven Papers (Thematic)

Papers in history, literature, philosophy, and legal studies rarely have a methods or results section. The evidence is texts, documents, or ideas rather than measurements.

The structure is thematic: Title, Introduction with a thesis statement, Body sections organised by theme, Conclusion, and References. An abstract may or may not be required. A literature review is often woven through the body instead of kept separate.

2. Abstract (and Keywords)

Purpose. A self-contained summary that helps readers decide whether to read the full paper.

What to include. The research problem, the aim, the method, the main findings, and the significance. Keep it to 150 to 300 words. No citations, no figures, and no first-time abbreviations. Some journals also ask for four to six keywords right after.

Where it sits. After the title page, before the introduction.

Common mistake. Writing the abstract first. Write it last, once you know what the paper actually says.

3. Introduction

Purpose. To orient the reader. What the topic is, why it matters, what remains unresolved, and what your paper adds.

What to include:

  • A research question or set of objectives stating what the study asks or aims to achieve.

4. Literature Review

Purpose. To show what the field already knows and to place your work in that conversation.

What to include. A synthesis of prior studies grouped by theme, method, or timeline. Identify agreements, disagreements, and the gap your paper addresses. A literature review is not a list of "Author X said this, Author Y said that." It is an organised argument about the state of a field.

Where it sits. After the introduction. In shorter papers or some journals, it is absorbed into the introduction.

Common mistake. Summarising sources one by one instead of grouping them. If your literature review reads like a stack of book reports, restructure it around themes or debates.

5. Methodology

Purpose. To explain how the study was done, in enough detail for a competent reader to repeat it.

What to include:

  • Research design. Qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, experimental, correlational, ethnographic, or case study.
  • Participants or sample. How many, how selected, and the relevant characteristics.
  • Materials or instruments. Surveys, tests, equipment, datasets, or coding schemes.
  • Procedure. The steps taken, in order.
  • Data analysis. The statistical tests or analytic approach used.
  • Ethical considerations. Informed consent, anonymity, and ethics-board approval for human participants.

Write in the past tense, because the study has already happened.

Where it sits. After the literature review in IMRaD papers. Humanities papers rarely have a methodology section. If the approach needs explaining, it usually goes in the introduction.

Common mistake. Describing what you did as a story. Aim for the precision of a recipe.

6. Results (or Findings)

Purpose. To present what the study found, with no interpretation.

What to include. The data itself. Organised tables, figures, and text pointing readers to the important patterns. Quantitative papers include descriptive statistics and inferential test results. Qualitative papers include themes, categories, or narratives from the data, often with representative quotes.

Where it sits. After the methodology.

Common mistake. Interpreting results in this section. Results report. Discussion interprets. If you catch yourself writing "this suggests" or "this is because," you have drifted into the discussion.

7. Discussion

Purpose. To explain what the findings mean.

What to include:

  • Interpretation. What the results say about your research question.
  • Comparison with prior work. How your findings align with, extend, or challenge the literature you reviewed.
  • Implications. For theory, practice, policy, or the field.
  • Limitations. An honest note on what the study could not do.
  • Directions for future research.

Where it sits. After the results. Some journals combine results and discussion into one section, especially in social sciences.

Common mistake. Overstating conclusions the data do not support. Anchor every interpretive claim to a specific result.

8. Conclusion

Purpose. To close the paper by restating what was asked, what was found, and why it matters.

What to include. A short recap of the research question, the headline findings, and the paper's contribution. Two or three tight paragraphs are usually enough.

Where it sits. After the discussion. In papers where results and discussion are combined, the conclusion often carries more of the closing weight.

Common mistake. Introducing new information or new arguments. If it was not in the paper, it does not belong in the conclusion.

9. References

Purpose. To list every source cited in the paper so readers can find them.

What to include. Every work you reference in the text, formatted in one style. Common styles are APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and IEEE. Reference managers like Zotero, Mendeley, and EndNote save hours and cut formatting errors.

A quick distinction between three terms readers often mix up:

References. Only the sources you cited. Standard in APA and most sciences.

Bibliography. Every source consulted, whether cited or not. Common in Chicago and humanities.

Works Cited. MLA's term for what APA calls a references list. Cited sources only.

10. Appendices, Tables, and Figures

Results Versus Discussion: The Distinction Students Get Wrong Most Often

The rule of thumb is simple. Results report. Discussion interprets.

A results-section sentence:

A discussion-section sentence about the same finding:

Notice the shift from what happened to what it means. Every interpretive move, whether it is comparison, explanation, or implication, belongs in the discussion. Every measured value belongs in the results.

How Qualitative and Quantitative Papers Differ

The components have the same names. What goes inside them changes.

When to Write Each Section

Papers do not have to be written in reading order. Most experienced writers use this workflow:

Methodology first. You already know what you did, so this section is the easiest to draft.

Results next. Write while the analysis is fresh in your memory.

Discussion. Once results are stable enough to interpret with confidence.

Literature review. This often clarifies once you know what you found.

Introduction. Write near the end. You can only introduce a paper once the paper exists.

Abstract. Write last. You cannot summarise what is not written.

Common Structural Mistakes (and Quick Fixes)

No clear research question or thesis. State it in one sentence at the end of the introduction. If you cannot, the argument is not focused yet.

Literature review as a stack of summaries. Group sources by theme or debate. End each group by connecting it back to your study.

Results and discussion blurred together. Read each sentence in the results section. Delete any that uses "because," "suggests," or "shows that." Move those to the discussion.

Discussion that ignores prior work. For every major finding, add one sentence linking it to the literature you reviewed.

Conclusion that repeats the introduction. Say what the paper now lets you claim that the introduction could not.

Inconsistent references. Use one reference manager from the start. Never format citations by hand.

Thesis treated as its own section. Keep it as a sentence inside the introduction, not a heading of its own.

An essay develops an argument, usually with a light source base. A research paper develops an argument or answers a question by engaging with evidence systematically.

That evidence is either primary data in empirical work, or a substantial body of scholarship in humanities work. The components in this guide are the scaffolding that makes that engagement clear to a reader.

Short version: an essay states a position. A research paper builds one from sourced evidence.
